Kids Program and Clinics

Thank you to everyone for your patience as we worked to set up the Kids Program for the Fall & Winter sessions this year.

Our Fall & Winter workouts will take place on Saturdays this year – from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Pan Am Pool.  The workouts will focus on run/fitness for the first hour, followed by swim workout for the second hour.

Annika Niblock will be our head coach for the program this winter.  Annika is a graduate of the TriMB Youth & MTC Programs, who is currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies at U of M and has also been working through her coaching certifications.  She’d intended to coach one of our regional teams during the 2020 Manitoba Summer Games and is keen to help a next generation of athletes fall in love with triathlon by sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for our sport.

The City of Winnipeg is still not able to confirm use of the Pan Am track for indoor run workouts, but we have confirmed our pool time at the facility (secured with Swim Manitoba).  As such, our October workouts will start at the outdoor Grant Park Track, which is in the field next to the Pan Am Pool main entrance, before moving indoors to the pool for the second hour of each session… at least for the first weeks.

Note – there will be no workouts on December 25th or January 1st, as the facility will be closed.  There will also be a few Saturdays in the new year when Swim Meets at the Pan Am Pool bump our facility access.  We will advise program registrants of these conflict dates as soon as possible.  Program pricing is designed to take these conflict dates into account.

Registration is limited to 12 athletes.

There is a question in the registration about whether or not the adult dropping your child off at workouts is able to provide proof of vaccination.  In support of Public Health Orders Section 14(1), the Pan Am Pool can only allow facility access to fully vaccinated adults – children are welcome to use the facility and engage in sport regardless of their vaccination status or that of their parents, but drop-offs and pick-ups will require a bit more planning.

Kids of Steel.

Kids of Steel is a Triathlon Canada program, provincially supported by Triathlon Manitoba. Its mission:

To guide youth development in triathlon and related multi-sport events through the delivery of a standardized program across Canada. The Kids of Steel® program will focus on the encouragement of healthy active living, lifelong participation, safety, fun, the building of skills, and involvement of Canada’s youth.

In support of the KOS program, Triathlon Manitoba hosts an annual Kids of Steel race series for children between 6 and 15 years old as of the calendar year end; as well as a training program. Manitoba Triathlon Centre has programs for 12 years and older as of the calendar year end who wish to develop in triathlon under professional coach supervision.

The KOS race program adheres to a standard set of rules which include age categories, maximum distances, bike regulations, and “no exceptions” on racing in an older category – see the KOS Principles and Rules and related KOS policies.

For the KOS current year race series information on location and registration, see Triathlon Manitoba’s event calendar for the Kids of Steel category.

All Kids of Steel race registrants must:

  • Adhere to the Kids of Steel Equipment and Guidelines
  • Have a Kids of Steel Triathlon Manitoba Membership
  • Have at least one parent or guardian attend the race

To encourage participation, finishers from 6 to 11 years of age as of the calendar year end, will be listed in the results alphabetically with their time in each age group. No placings will be awarded.
