The Everything You Need to Know About Cycling Clinic
May 4, 2024

Whatever you want to know about cycling, we have you covered!
Our goal for this clinic is to pass along hard-earned knowledge, covering what we feel are three of the most important / impactful areas of cycling, to get you and your bike through training and onto the start line in shape to succeed. Here’s what we’ll cover:
Basic Bike Maintenance – Safe Cycling in Traffic – Performance for Racing
Basic Bike Maintenance – 9:00 am
We’ll start with the most important lesson for any cyclist – How to Change a Flat Tire. You’ll have the chance to get hands-on, understand the keys to success and challenges to be overcome. We’ll follow that up with a mini-lesson on shifting & braking, so that even if you can’t fix what’s happening, you can at least communicate the issue to a repair shop.
Cycling in Traffic – 10:00 am
As much as we might think that getting touched by the weeds is the scariest part of triathlon – training in traffic surely is. The good news is that our Executive Director earned two decades of experience working in Road Safety, specifically cycling safety for the last seven years, before coming to Triathlon Manitoba, so he’ll share global best practice for how to interact with traffic and keep you and your friends safe on Manitoba’s roads and highways.
The lesson will cover a cyclist’s positioning on roads, position through corners and turns, how to make a lane change when needed (as an individual or group) and other tips to interact and influence traffic in effective ways to get through your training.
Performance for Racing – 11:00 am
Our sport has tons of gadgets – for training, for racing, for recovery, for anything. Many of the most expensive gadgets are related to the cycling portion of triathlon, but you don’t have to spend $$$$($?) on a bike and race wheels to excel on the bike course. Even worse, it’s possible to spend big money and actually make yourself slower or less capable on the bike if you make the wrong decisions. The final part of our bike clinic will review some of the best ways to gain performance as well as the most common errors to avoid, but most importantly, we’ll have lots of opportunity for questions and answers from everyone in attendance.
What else
Sure some of us might already be happy enough to sit around and talk about bikes for a few hours, but wouldn’t we be happier still with snacks too? TriMB will bring in some coffee urns, a few trays of cinnamon buns from Tall Grass and other snacks to make sure everyone leaves this clinic ready to ride!
You’re welcome to attend one portion of the clinic, two portions or all three. Given the date, you’re also welcome to attend as your favourite Star Wars character (though any Trekkies will be asked to leave immediately).
The Clinic cost is $5 for Triathlon Manitoba Members (and also a good reminder to Renew Your Membership if you haven’t already) and free for members of our Sanctioned Clubs (club leaders have coupon codes to waive fees). Non-members are welcome to attend too, but with a $10 registration fee.
