Winnipeg Indoor Triathlon
TriMB is excited to partner with the University of Manitoba for a third year of Indoor Triathlon!
A different type of racing, designed to challenge new and experienced triathletes, while making it easier than ever to take the start line.
Held on Saturday, February 24th, the race format is simple — swim, bike & run for a set amount of time as indicated below. The farther you go within the time, the more points you score! Races will be held in waves of a maximum of 12 participants per wave. Wave start times will be communicated after registration closes.
Adult Long Course – 15min Swim / 20min Bike / 15min Run
Adult Short Course – 10min Swim / 15min Bike / 10min Run
Youth/Junior Course – 10min Swim / 15min Bike / 10min Run
All racing takes place indoors at the U of M facility, with swimming in the Joyce Fromson Pool, before bike (stationary bikes are provided) and run at the Jim Daley Fieldhouse at Max Bell Centre. Your swim laps will be counted, the bike computer will provide your distance and your running laps will be counted. Transition is simple and stress free. A set amount of time is provided to everyone to transition from the pool to bike (15 minutes), and bike to run (5 minutes) at the same time. No one gets left behind!
Being fast or slow only matters to you – everyone swims, bikes, and runs for the same amount of time. You can tear up the course and try to set a PD, or take it easy at your open pace.
NOTE 1 – When registering, select “Indoor Triathlon” from the first menu, then scroll down and click search to load the Triathlon registration options

2024 Officials Clinic
May 2024
The Everything You Need to Know About Cycling Clinic
Whatever you want to know about cycling, we have you covered!
Our goal for this clinic is to pass along hard-earned knowledge, covering what we feel are three of the most important / impactful areas of cycling, to get you and your bike through training and onto the start line in shape to succeed. Here’s what we’ll cover:
Basic Bike Maintenance – Safe Cycling in Traffic – Performance for Racing
Basic Bike Maintenance – 9:00 am
We’ll start with the most important lesson for any cyclist – How to Change a Flat Tire. You’ll have the chance to get hands-on, understand the keys to success and challenges to be overcome. We’ll follow that up with a mini-lesson on shifting & braking, so that even if you can’t fix what’s happening, you can at least communicate the issue to a repair shop.
Cycling in Traffic – 10:00 am
As much as we might think that getting touched by the weeds is the scariest part of triathlon – training in traffic surely is. The good news is that our Executive Director earned two decades of experience working in Road Safety, specifically cycling safety for the last seven years, before coming to Triathlon Manitoba, so he’ll share global best practice for how to interact with traffic and keep you and your friends safe on Manitoba’s roads and highways.
The lesson will cover a cyclist’s positioning on roads, position through corners and turns, how to make a lane change when needed (as an individual or group) and other tips to interact and influence traffic in effective ways to get through your training.
Performance for Racing – 11:00 am
Our sport has tons of gadgets – for training, for racing, for recovery, for anything. Many of the most expensive gadgets are related to the cycling portion of triathlon, but you don’t have to spend $$$$($?) on a bike and race wheels to excel on the bike course. Even worse, it’s possible to spend big money and actually make yourself slower or less capable on the bike if you make the wrong decisions. The final part of our bike clinic will review some of the best ways to gain performance as well as the most common errors to avoid, but most importantly, we’ll have lots of opportunity for questions and answers from everyone in attendance.
What else
Sure some of us might already be happy enough to sit around and talk about bikes for a few hours, but wouldn’t we be happier still with snacks too? TriMB will bring in some coffee urns, a few trays of cinnamon buns from Tall Grass and other snacks to make sure everyone leaves this clinic ready to ride!
You’re welcome to attend one portion of the clinic, two portions or all three. Given the date, you’re also welcome to attend as your favourite Star Wars character (though any Trekkies will be asked to leave immediately).
The Clinic cost is $5 for Triathlon Manitoba Members (and also a good reminder to Renew Your Membership if you haven’t already) and free for members of our Sanctioned Clubs (club leaders have coupon codes to waive fees). Non-members are welcome to attend too, but with a $10 registration fee.

Hecla Triathlon
2024 Hecla Triathlon
The Hecla Triathlon will take place in Hecla, Manitoba, July 20th, 2024. This race started in 2015 and has continued to grow and evolve each year since, and is home to Manitoba’s only Long Course race.
The event is a popular destination race and may also have you feeling like your are somewhere outside of Manitoba. This year’s Long Course Triathlon; Standard Duathlon; Standard & Long Course Aquabike will all be World Qualifer events, where the top age group female and male athletes can make their way onto the Canadian Age Group World Championship Team, for the 2025 Multisport World Championships held in Pontevedra, Spain. (the Standard Aquabike distance is raced as part of the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Final in Wollongong, Austrailia)
The Hecla Triathlon will not disappoint, with tremendous athlete support to ensure the day goes smoothly!
About the Hecla Triathlon
- The swim course is protected by the marina, guarding from what can be an unpredictable Lake Winnipeg, with only a short run to transition T1.
- The bike course is flat and fast, lock and load, and keep your eyes open for wildlife!
- Moving onto the run, you will experience both road and trail, skirting the marina and hugging the lake.
- This course will provide you both a physically and mentally challenging race, packed with stunning views, showcasing the beauty of the island.
Olympic Women’s Triathlon
Because we don’t always need a Manitoban involved for a race to inspire (jump to 2:03 in the linked video if you’ve never seen the 2012 race), it’s always worth watching the race and connecting with the amazing stories on our sport’s biggest stage.
The women’s individual race is scheduled to run from 8:00 to 10:40 am CET, which means a 1:00 am start for viewers in Manitoba.
CBC continues as Canada’s official Olympic broadcast partner. They’re coverage of the Women’s Olympic Triathlon begins at 12:50am on Wednesday morning and can be accessed USING THIS LINK
Olympic Men’s Triathlon – RESCHEDULED
It may not be an event taking place in Manitoba, but it’s certainly a race we’ll all be invested in, as Oak Bluff’s Tyler Mislawchuk tackles his third Olympic Games.
The men’s individual race is scheduled to start at 10:45 am CET, after the conclusion of the Women’s triathlon event, which means a 3:45 am race start for viewers in Manitoba.
CBC continues as Canada’s official Olympic broadcast partner. They’re coverage of the Women’s and Men’s Olympic Triathlon begins at 12:50am on Wednesday morning (or Tuesday night?) and can be accessed USING THIS LINK
FULL UPDATE – Following a meeting on water quality held on 30 July at 3.30am attended by Paris 2024, representatives of World Triathlon and their Technical and Medical Delegates, the International Olympic Committee, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Prefecture of the Île-de-France Region involved in carrying out water quality tests, decision has been made to postpone the men’s triathlon event which was due to be held on 30 July at 8am.
Considering the latest weather information, it has been decided to schedule the men’s triathlon event on 31 July at 10h45. The women’s triathlon is due to take place the same day at 8am. Both triathlons are subject to the forthcoming water tests complying with the established World Triathlon thresholds for swimming. The original contingency day also remains in place for August 2, for further considerations.
Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes.

Peace Garden Triathlon
The best course in Manitoba isn’t actually in Manitoba*
With amazing support from the Race Director and Peace Garden staff, we’re looking forward to this race’s fourth running.
If you haven’t yet been out to the Peace Garden event, you’re missing something truly special. Triathlon takes over the Garden for one weekend a year, with participants enjoying the most amazing triathlon playground you could imagine. Even the campground is a dream.
Need more convincing? Check out Photos from Last Year’s Event.
The Mixed Relay returns for 2024, while last year’s introduction of an Olympic distance event stays on the schedule too, for two days of incredible racing.
“What is a Mixed Relay” you ask? “Um, it’s like only the coolest thing to happen in sports this decade!”
Seriously, it doesn’t matter which sport you choose, Mixed Relays are Awesome! In triathlon, they involve four racers, each doing a shorter swim/bike/run race, then handing off to the next member of their team. Here’s what it looks like for Triathlon – also note the bonus points for Tyler’s greatest beach dive of all time!**
What makes it better still at the Peace Garden? You get to choose your team – family, friends, fastest people you know or funniest people you know, pick the team you want to be on. The course distance for each relay leg is suitable for ages 12 and up, so even younger families can compete. One of you doesn’t swim – that’s fine too, just get someone else to swim twice. Four little triathlons, however you want to do it – that’s the Mixed Relay!
This year’s Mixed Relay will be a World Qualifer event, where the top age group female and male athletes can make their way onto the Canadian Age Group World Championship Team, for the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Final held in Wollongong, Australia. If you’ve already qualified for the Sprint or Standard Triathlon events in Wollongong, this is a great way to add a ‘test the course’ event to your trip!
“Won’t Someone Think of the Children!”
While past years of this event featured a stand-alone Kids of Steel Duathlon, the numbers were low and the volunteer demands to set up a separate course and transition zone were substantial. Most of the participating athletes were also old enough to take part in the Mixed Relay event too (as many did). This year, we’re encouraging our younger athletes to compete in the mixed relay.
The mixed relay course is a similar distance to those used for 12 & older Kids of Steel races. The course features a challenging bike and deep water swim, so it’s not a course we’d recommend for a younger athlete’s first triathlon participation, but most athletes that age or older should be comfortable competing. Because this is the final event on our race calendar before the MB Summer Games, we can also allow qualified 10-11 year old athletes to participate at this distance, but ask that you contact our office first to discuss participation options for your younger athlete.
“Day Two – This Time It’s Personal”
Day two features individual racing, with triathlon and duathlon options, over the Sprint or Olympic distances. You’ll know the swim, bike and run terrain quite well from hopefully having raced the day prior, which means you can enjoy the challenge of a few more km in this beautiful venue and maybe even push yourself to a new level.
However you decide to participate, we’re pretty sure you won’t find a better way to spend August long weekend than racing and playing the International Peace Garden.
To be eligible for World Championship Qualification in the Mixed Relay, you must complete an Expression of Interest PRIOR to the event on August 3rd. That expression must be submitted within the three weeks prior to the event

** – That’s a professional athlete on a closed course. Do NOT try that at home!
Olympic Triathlon Mixed Relay
One of the best things added to sport in the past decade has been mixed relays. Is there any better way to judge a nation’s strength than to race a combined teams of each country’s top men and women against the World?
Triathlon’s mixed relay event is scheduled to run from 8:00 to 10:10 am CET, which means a 1:00 am start for viewers in Manitoba.

Teams will be selected based on the results and participation during the following events, one of which must be a Kids of Steel Race:
– 2023 Peace Garden Duathlon
– 2023 Riding Mountain Triathlon
– Three Triathlon Clinics held during the 2023-24 winter season
– 2024 The Pas Tri-Community Triathlon
– 2024 Birds Hill Triathlon
– 2024 St. Malo Triathlon
– 2024 Interlake Triathlon
It is our goal to find a spot for all athletes participating in three qualifying events. Athletes completing two qualification events will be given consideration after all three-event athletes have been placed on their teams.

Riding Mountain “Dri-Tri” Duathlon
Riding Mountain Triathlon is a premier destination multi-sport event on the prairies. Located in beautiful Riding Mountain National Park, where out of the never-ending wheat fields emerges one of Canada’s best-kept secrets.
The event has long been a highlight of the Triathlon Manitoba season, but the 2024 event will need to take on a different format, as explained in this important note from the organizer:
***This year we are dealing with regulations and National orders protecting the National Park from the Threat of Zebra muscles, and the potential damage they pose to the clear lake ecosystem. Due to this potential threat, the swim is not allowed this year, and we will be hosting a duathlon event, with all the usual pizzaz and SWAG of the normal race, with the return to the aim to return to the swim in 2025. ***
Price adjustments have been made; entry fees have decreased.
Age requirements per event are:
• Sprint Du – 16 years of age +
• Super Sprint Du – 12* years of age +
• Relay participants – 14 years of age +
**Please note: There are no exceptions to these age restrictions.**

Riding Mountain Kids of Steel – CANCELLED
CANCELLED – With new restrictions placed on events in Riding Mountain this season as the Park works to battle the Zebra muscle invasion, the organizers of Riding Mountain Triathlon have opted not to host the Kids of Steel event in 2024.
We’ll hope to see this event back on the calendar next summer.
September 2024
Paralympic Triathlon – SCHEDULE CHANGE (AGAIN!)
Who’s looking forward to cheering on Leanne Taylor as she makes her Paralympic debut? EVERYONE!!
While the initial release of the para-tri schedule had Leanne’s event on Day two, it’s now been switched to September 1st, with an 8:20 start time in Paris, which equates to 1:20 am in Winnipeg – so it’s really as much of a Saturday night watch than Sunday morning.
And just like that, we’re back to the original plan. Water quality in the Seine was a bit below what they were seeking for athletes, so the race has been postponed to Monday morning, still a 1:20 am start time and still broadcast on the same link below.
NOTE – Water quality checks are performed at 3:30am Paris time, so if you’re setting an alarm to watch, best to check for updates around 9:00 or 9:30pm (3:30 am CET is 8:30 pm Winnipeg time)
CBC continues as Canada’s Olympic / Paralympic broadcaster, and you’ll be able to watch Leanne’s event using THIS LINK
(the same link can be used to watch the event as a replay later in the day)
Leanne has been on another level this year, stronger than ever, with the same amazing drive, and we can’t wait to see her race. If you want to know more about Leanne and the amazing season she’s having, check out THIS STORY for a bit of background and to be ready for Sunday’s cheering. Fingers crossed she gets the race she has earned on the challenging Paris course.
This could be the highlight of the Triathlon season. You don’t want to miss it!
Let’s hope the organizers avoid any water issues in September!
